jetstar88
Turned on the PC tonight and it refused to boot from the first hard
drive...a 13 gig that is approximately 3 years old...give or take
(yeah... I will check the manufacture date later).
What was odd was that if I turned off the PC for a minute or less even
and did a cold boot, it sometimes got past...

Is anyone interested in any of the tapes below? If so,
I'll let them go for some lunch money plus the cost of

Switching between SATA drives by
chrisv
Let's say you wanted to SATA drives, one with Windoze, one with Linux.
Is there an easy way to switch between them without using kludgey boot
manager programs? Something like ROM Tec's harddrive switch, but for
SATA.

Hard Drive Electrical Failure - will reward help by
Ray
Hi,
My Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 45 Ultra ATA 100 Hard Drive (20.4 GB)
recently failed. It isn't recognized by BIOS - it won't even spin when
the computer is powered up. There are obviously electrical problems
with it. It failed once, then I tried to power on my computer, and
smoke came out (either...

recovering from disk crash? by
Wayne Fulton
A 2.5 year old IBM 40GB disk (disk 1) died suddenly, would not boot in
the morning. It had partitions of C: Win98SE, D: XP, E: and F: data
(all but F was FAT32).
Could be worse, as I previously used a second disk (disk 2) for Ghost
image backups of three partitions of Disk 1 (and important...

I've been wanting to buy a DVD burner for some time now and been
wondering what to buy. I've gathered info about what the differences are
between the + and - format but I've also been told contradicting info by
salesman about what they do and ultimately which way to go.
I want a DVD burner mainly...

Ribbon Cable by

I want to reconfigure my Master/Slave devices but the 40/80 ribbon cable
connections wont span from the 3.5" bays to the 5.5" bays as I need them to
do what I want. Do they commonly make longer ribbon cables, longer between
the master and slave connections? Is this something you can pick...

Swapping circuit boards on identical drives by
Li'l ol' me
I have two identical (I think 10gig drives). One is not IDs by BIOS, the
other seems OK, but the SMART status is BAD. I thought I'd have a go at
switching the boards round as some people report success wth this.
I first removed the board from the dirve with the bad SMART status and put
on it...

Are ATA and IDE interchangeable terms? by
Doc
I'm looking into getting a faster, bigger hard drive. The drives on
the shelf at the local computer stores all list ATA/100 or ATA/133. I
see articles on the net on IDE/ATA vs SCSI. So, is ATA the same as
IDE? If not, what's the relationship?
I'm running an IBM 300PL 550mhz PIII, Win98 first...
