Adding bigger drive to old computer by
twiceasshort
I was given an old computer from work. When I tried to replace the
original 6.4 GB hhd with a Western Digital 40 GB hhd, the BIOS would
not recognize the new drive. Would a seperate IDE controller card
solve the limitation problem?
Thanks in advance

EIDE Bad Sector Processing ? by
Ron Reaugh
I'm seeing a set of behaviors over a period of time across several different
mfgs' EIDE HDs(mfged in that last 3 years) that leads me to a new
hypothesis.
It has always been my understanding that the bad sector processing procedure
was one whereby if the drive began to find a sector that was hard...

CD Drives on a Promise Controller Card by
Yisroel Markov
Greetings,
a while ago the onboard IDE controller in my PC went haywire - the
BIOS saw all the drives (2 hard drives, CD-ROM, DVD-R), but wouldn't
boot, and booting from DOS reported all sort of crap about the hard
drives. So I put in a Promise Ultra133 TX2 card, put the HDs on its
IDE1 port,...

I am not interested in the button or the software. I just want the drive to
be an external drive.
Do I need to install any...

Has SMART ever successfully predicted failure for anybody here? by
Will Dormann
SMART monitoring sounds like a great idea to me. Who better to predict
a drive's failure than the drive itself, right? I mean, the drive knows
what it's doing internally, such as silently remapping bad sectors,
keeping track of how long it takes to spin up, error counts and all that
fun...

New HD for Old Computer by
Bob Simon
I have an old computer that I loaded with linux and am using as a
network gateway and firewall. The ASUS SP97-V MB supports UDMA/33 and
the existing Caviar 31600 drive is starting to have sector errors. A
quick scan of Priceline shows that for around $40, I can get either a
5400 rpm drive or an...

I can go into the Windows Explorer and click on the directory
tree, and some of the tree branches will open, and...

Network File Server by
Bob
What is the minimum configuration for a Windows-based network file
server for a small SOHO LAN? Would you use Win2K or XP Pro? The idea
is to put disk resources in one machine for ease of maintenance and
reduced cost.
