Connecting a 3590 /3590e tape drive to a PC by
ZaneK
Hi All,
Recently, we received a pile of 3590 tapes from one of our customers,
and we have no way of reading them. After a bit of digging, I found
some reasonably priced refurbs (http://www.tapedrives-3480to3590.com/),
though I'm still in a bit of sticker-shock.
My extremely naive...

VTL vs. Backup to Disk by
[email protected]
I'm trying to figure out the pros and cons for backing up to a disk
device vs. using a virtual tape library like the Clariion Disk Library.
You're backing up to disk on both of them, presumably at the same
speeds but it seems that the VTL adds a level of complexity and cost.
Does anyone have any...

General musings and/or recommendations on number of global spares to keep? by
Dan Stromberg
I've been working on a Sun StorEdge 3511 with dual RAID controllers and
three expansion boxes.
We originally purchased the equipment expecting to get 16 terabytes of
usable space.
Now that it's "all set up", we're really seeing more like 14 or 15
terabytes, depending on how you do the...

Snap! Assist Software by
[email protected]
Hi All,
We have 3 Snap! servers in use, and one (2200) have been giving us
problems off and on, but of late it seems to have lost it's network
connectivity. I was hoping to reload the OS to see if this solves the
problems, but you need the Snap! Assist software to do this. Problem
here is that...

interfilesystem copies: large du diffs by
orgone
I recently rsync'd around 2.8TB between a RHE server (jfs fs) and a
Netapps system. Did a 'du -sk' against each to verify the transfers:
2894932960 sources total, KB
2751664496 destination total, KB
That's a 140GB discrepancy. Subsequent verbose rsyncs have turned up
nothing that was...

Newbie: SAN access by
manuel
Hello,
As far as I understand, when you have a SAN network with a fibre switch
and several computers want to access to the same resource (hard disk
arrays) a file-locking software is necessary. If it is not used, every
computer sees the resource as private. If I am not correct, please, let
me...

these before, is the Laser/LED light visible during inventory if you
look into the top of the unit? I'm not seeing any light at all during

Quantum's deceptive tactics by

Hi,
I have had a multitude of problems with my superloader L600. I call
Quantum tech support under a warranty contract quite often. As of
recently, all superloader support has been outsourced to India. The
way I found out was every time I call, a person speaking with an Indian
accent would pick...

Is there a rigorous definition for 'primary partition' ? by
Bill Schaible
For years I've been using boot manager programs with multiple primary
partitions on multiple drives. Or I skip the boot manager and use a disk
editor to change the partition table in some cases. From that perspective I
can't figure out what would be a proper definition for a 'primary'
partition. ...

DirectBackup of CIFS shares , networking problem by
[email protected]
Background info :
EMC Celerra IP : 10.36.96.217
Backup Server IP : 10.36.96.208
Backup between the two works fine, however has to go through a switch
and drains the main bandwidth available from the Celerra, so what I
have done is directly connected a port on the Celerra via cat6 to
another...
