another SSD aspirant by

$75/US 480GB ADATA Ultimate SU650 2.5" SSD
ADATA is apparently the cookie-cutter among SDD technologies: They
combine all the available controllers and NAND. Not sure how long
this one has been on their back-burner, in superceding the SU800
series, although for ADATA it is rather peculiar: On all...

Security using XP with Firefox no longer updating itself by
John B. Smith
Firefox tells me they will no longer be updating their XP 32bit
version. Their solution: buy Windows 10 if I want to be secure. My
question to you guys is how much trouble can I get into by ignoring
their 'advice' and proceeding as usual?

Weirdness in my Chinese keyboard sweatshop by
Flasherly[_2_]
Couple of keys I'd resoldered are both num6 next to the far-right +.
The former went intermittent again. Opened up totally-black keyboard
secured by 8 hex-ish if not Chinese variant phone screws on top, 8
cross-head Phillips screws on bottom. Checked with x30 magnifier to
find solder slop, which...

Slightly off-topic: Tracking Files by
Bill[_39_]
I use CCleaner everyday to purge my browsing history, etc.
It used to run faster. It takes quite a while to even remove
"counters.dat", whatever that is. I don't remember it being an
issue before. Evidently, I can accumulate 2000-8000 "tracking
files" without even doing a lot of browsing...

Crucial/Inland Pro/IPSG/Microcenter by

All the same and $44/US for a 240G MLC SDD (VNand or 3D high-density
variant). 3-yr warranty through other than Amazon -- a Microcenter
storefront distribution play thereon. Plus taxes for new and
improved, US-NET leveling tax legislation for individual states. Ebay
can't touch it, although they...

HDD ratings by

3T models were recently atrocious, past few years, whereas 2/4/6TB
weren't. Strangely eye-opening. I'd still want manufacturing drive
dates, model verification numbers, still, were I interested in a...

Archival Storage by
Flasherly[_2_]
Recent assessment over the state of things, I'm running 10TBytes of
HDDs: Five TBye HDD or at once and in addition from a backup reserve.
Everything, all the way to a couple of Seagate 200G drives, even a
pair of 250G WD Caviers. The latter, although the Seagates are by no
means either immune,...

Fixed my new broken chinese keyboard by

Chinese Blue Mechanical Keyboard Switches.
A dozen mini-screw attachments, 5 regular, the rest of which I got to
with a Chinese mobile phone repair kit. (Some 30 or so usual
screw-type fittings in today's micro and otherwise manufacturing
jigsaw fits.)
Pulled it apart, two pieces with many...

packaging of DIMMs (new componentry) by

I notice that some brands of memory come with the DIMM stuck in a black
platic tray (presumably the conductive anti-static stuff) but others are
totally in transparent plastic.
So is the protection important.

2T SSD SATA - $250 by
Flasherly[_2_]
Direct Chinese marketing - no warranty, no nothing.
Except, it is MICRON branded.
My Micron, I bought, a USA-distribution of their 256G SSD,
cost me four-times, per GByte, more.
IOW if that same drive, cost adjusted for this one, it would have cost
me $30 instead of $120 I paid:

Unreally Lucky HDD by
Flasherly[_2_]
Slammed a few times the past couple days with fast black/brownouts.
Not sure if that exacerbated my HDD, which I'd run diagnostics and
begun a few months ago to suspect for a fault.
Seagate 2T HDD with probably going on 10 years usage. Diagnostic
software "red alerts" prompted me to clear off...

Upgrading USB 2 to USB 3 ports on a computer case by
Yes[_2_]
I have an Antec 300 Illusion case. There are two USB 2.0 connector
ports on the front. I'm thinking that I may want to upgrade them to
USB 3.0.
Has anyone upgraded USB 2 ports on a chassis to USB 3? I'd like to get
some idea of what would need to be done. I could, of course, add a USB
3.0 hub...

PC with multiple organ failures by
[email protected]
I was asked to check out a PC that wouldn't boot. It powered itself off
after a second. It looked like mainboard was kaput. Then I checked out
all the bits I removed. Both DIMMs were bad, and one of the two hard disks
also bad.
There was no obvious damage (such as beer spillage).
So what do...

Win10 ISO on archive.org?? by
[email protected]
My partner has a old HP PC, that was originally sold with Win7. It is
unfit for latest version of Win10. In another forum, it was suggested to
stay with 1703 version if you had it.
Microsoft downloads only vomits forth the latest version for punters.
If one searches for ISO of older builds, you get...

Intel's Cannon Lake (10 nm) delayed by

LONG time coming. Samsung is making 10 nm stuff, but Intel claims their
10 nm is denser than Samsung's. It seems Intel, AMD, Samsung have different
definitions of nm lithography.
So far, there is a mobile i3. I await something with more grunt.
Running Skylake-X on sustained AVX-512 will almost melt...

Unicomp Model-M a disaster by

I have (without Windows Keys) but the one I am using now is a DISASTER!
I do not know what they did with their USB controller, but it is...
