Toshiba laptop L670 1JQ core i5 M480 2.67 GHz locked at 1.4 GHz bothcores ?!? by [email protected]
This toshiba laptop which I got from my mother: Toshiba laptop L670 1JQ core i5 M480 2.67 GHz WILL NOT GO ANY FASTER THEN 1.4 GHz both cores ?! WTF ?! Hyper threading is on, there are 4 CPU "cores" visible in task manager. YESTERDAY WAS A HOT DAY, SAW TEMPERATURES OF CPU GO TO 93 celcius, GPU...

Samsung QVO -- correction: it's not slow by Flasherly[_2_]
Other than a quick couple file copies, not sure what happened after I formatted it. I put together a 250G copy operation and moved it onto the QVO and into the computer it's intended, and it was 15% faster than the above format and a few fast-check writes, from a mechanical (or at the time then a...

Samsung QVC by Flasherly[_2_]
Formatted it for a single logical partition, and transferred a couple of files. Not initially impressive, and considerably slower than expected for comparable SATA, though smaller, 256G SSD drives that do well enough for a third faster. Including another but better Samsung EVO non-Pro series,...

asrock = useless pricks by [email protected]
I have a Z97M Anniversary mainboard. Doesn't boot, emits 6 beeps. I have done all the usual crap, swapping RAM, graphics card, CMOS battery, power supply ad nauseum.... The user manual doesn't have page for beep codes. I tried searching the asrock website, just get 500 internal server...

HP 700 SSD Newer models didn't apparently learn by Flasherly[_2_]
Noticed another guy getting the same temperatures I saw. And I do see the resulting 40-50 MBps he mentions, but its nice to be informed that is a "throttling issue" at 130F. I also just checked to verify his faster speeds now that mine's cool: Also true: I now get double the above rates. I...

HP/Crucial/Samsung (SSD sidenotes) by Flasherly[_2_]
Hadn't largely utilized a HP SSD, as it were, a back-up of a back-up until yesterday;- Where it sat, on top of a DVD unit adjacent the top-mounted power supply in an Antec all-aluminum Lanboy;- a lack of SATA PWR-splitters, as much a convenience where there isn't airflow other than a upright case's...

Non-Breakable Logitech Marble TrackBall by Flasherly[_2_]
Been through a few of them. Made to crap after a couple years, not much more;- $20/US on sale but usually closer to $30 when time to replace. Ambidextrous, four buttons, and better than nice software for aspects of ambidexterity Logitech published at one point if and before "going to hell" as...

Nicely mannered now by Flasherly[_2_]
Put a smaller HP SSD in until the Samsung 1T arrives. Sure looks nice. The case disk LED now might burp if even noticed, instead of hanging around a controller recovery errors. My up-&-coming 1T SSD may be pretty expensive, equivalent to a 3T or 4T HDD in mechanical, but why not a little more...

Told You So II by Flasherly[_2_]
Yep - the failing 1.5T Samsung, I put in a Samsung 1T. The 1Tbyte didn't last 48hours, before major latency issues. Yanked in a blink and diagnosed. Same deal as the 1.5T: Wouldn't run until I put it under a 115V 4" fan, totally cooling it. Also kind of crunchy and grindy while hot in the...

Inside of Cages with the Safety Bars Revmoved by Flasherly[_2_]
Flipped a case to its side, MB plane down and lower, of course, whereupon the hard-drive rack is uppermost in most or many case designs. The idea then is to render basic storage moveability or HDD maintenance: No sliding out of HDDs affixed with screws or accounting lateral-plane MB component...

Know bulk NAS by Flasherly[_2_]
A USB3 hub, if they're up to it. Couple the hub to USB3-to-SSD/SATA, low-power adaptors for six 1T SSDs, stuff it all in a cardboard shoebox and instant NAS. Copyright the idea and send it to Popular Mechanics. My first SSD, an EVO 830 64G, boots perfectly from a *NIX multi-boot arbitrator on...

Told you so [HDD failure] by Flasherly[_2_]
Samsung 1T Black, puked at 7200 for not long, but that makes it really black and blue now, mostly all over. Temperature issues, as I suspected. Been through this with a newer WD 2T, near in getting it to take after cleaning connections then repeatedly powering up from a docking station. How that...

ATX24 socket on mobo - PS is only ATX20! by [email protected]
I had a look at an old HP Pavillion PC and the power supply has only 20 wires going into the mainboard. Jezus, that is cheapskatery I did not expect from a major corporation. It is apparently a "home" PC with i3 and low-end graphics card. Presuming they use the same mainboard for a more...

Western Digital quetion by Yes[_2_]
Hi, Does anyone have comments about the quality/reliability difference between WD Black and WD Blue? Their ads say the Blue line is for everyday perforamnce and the Black line is for power computing. Usually, whne I buy an HD, I choose "power computing" on the assumption that those should be more...

is re-badging of PCI-E cards common? by [email protected]
I was looking for 2.5GBASE-T ethernet cards, and there seem to be several more available than a year ago. But I noticed (on Chinese market sites) there are 3 with brand names I never heard of, and the pictures of the cards look the same. So are there firms that get a factory to make a generic...

Intel cooler gone all clingy, will not detach. by [email protected]
A mainboard died, so I wished to salvage the i7 CPU therefrom. Has stock Intel cooler. Can turn one of the locks 90 degrees, but the other 3 only turn about 60 degrees, so can't pull them up. I have done this at least 100 times before.

I think it's a bad on/off switch, how can I tell? by Charlie Hoffpauir
My computer won't restart after a local power failure last night. Our neignborhood lost power for 7 hours, but the computer was on a UPS when we lost power. I shut it down with the power switch , but after power was restored, it wouldn't start. I thought perhaps the PS was fried in spite of the UPS...

SSD question by Yes[_2_]
newbie questions he Do internal SSD cards require a constant uninterrrupted supply of power to maintain the data stored in it? What about external SSD cards? I just saw an ad for a portable SSD (Crucial 500GB X8 Portable SSD - Up to 1050 MB/s - USB 3.2 - USB-C, USB-A - CT500X8SSD9) that...
