OK to have 500GB hard drive as one partition? by
Jon D
I use XP Pro/SP2 at home. The PC hardware is a bit slow.
I have got a 500GB hard drive mainly to use as a backup for my main
data.
Is there anything (perhaps in XP or in NTFS or from good sense) which
suggests that I'm wiser not to make the whole 500 GB into one partition?

cleaning up dust inside Dell inspiron 1100 by
s
My computer is three years old and recently has been making too much
fan noise. I suspect dust has accumulated inside the processor, hard
disk and other parts which might be causing this. There is no software
issue. I am running XP Pro with SP2 on a 2.2GHz with 512M RAM.
Can anybody advise how to...

PC parts with the style of a mac? by
Mickel
I've had a customer request PCs that look as "cool" as a Mac. Can anyone
suggest anything? All I can think of is Dell but I wouldn't say they have as
much style as a mac. I think the actual box might not be important, as they
can be hidden. It's more just the screen, keyboard, mouse and speakers...

Is a 300w power supply enough for my system? by
[email protected]
I've got a 5-year old 300w power supply (Antec PP-303X). I'm about to
add a IDE RAID controller and another hard drive, and a few more case
fans, and am wondering if I need a new power supply. Here's what my
system will have after the upgrades:
ABIT KT7-RAID mobo
Athlon Tbird 1.2 GHz
GlobalWin...

Removable Hard Drive Bay Problems Anyone? by
Rus
Sorry if this has been covered. I've been using removable hard drive bays
for years without problems. The design I chose implements a "Centronics"
type connector (looks like a parallel connector for a printer.)
Things are great for years. Then? I buy a couple of new WD hard drives
and then...

500 GB WD My Book external H/D suddenly not wanting to fire up by
muzician21
I've got this WD 500 gb Firewire external My Book drive I've been
using to store mostly video files for a big video project. It doesn't
have an on/off switch, it powers up when power is first applied, goes
dormant after a period of inactivity and restarts when you try to
access it. It's worked...

CPU thermal paste? by
Ablang
I just inherited a K6-2 300 Mhz computer, but the CPU fan & heatsink
keeps falling down off the CPU, which means that the thermal paste is no longer
sticking.
Does anyone know a good place online where I can buy this cheap, or
perhaps someone has ideas for other ways of keeping the fan & heatsink...

Destroying Hard Drives by

I have several hard drives to destroy/completely erase. They are already
removed from the computer cases. Dismantling them one by one and sanding
the disks is messy and time consuming. Extreme heat comes to mind as an
approach. Anyone with any experience putting them on the barbeque set...

I blew the fuse on my Radio Shack multimeter recently. I was testing
the current across a 9V battery. I verified that it is just the fuse
that was blown by removing the fuse, shorting across the gap, and
verifying that the needle on the meter did indeed move on resistance
tests (no way am I gonna...

What wears out in an HDD? by

What wears out in an HDD? Is it only the tone arm that breaks? or
can the bearings the platter rides on break??? Good watches use
jewels, rubies, as bearings; and cheap watches use metal. What do
hard drives use?
I googled but couldn't find much about this. Does the spindle really
