Windows 10 version 1903, May 2019 Update is interesting...but has abizarre 'spy' feature in File Explorer by RayLopez99
In the Version 1903 update of Windows 10 rolling out in May 2019 (32 bit, just got it, haven't gotten the 64 bit yet) I don't like the new "File Explorer". For some reason--and I don't know how--Windows 10 keeps a silent "journal" on in the background and knows what files were deleted and/or...

Finally figured, after destroying several of them, what it takes to toughen them up. Several months ago, I also caught one a sale for half off. I have two prime working units. The trackball unit has four click relay buttons, assignable with Logitech software to goes back to mythological ancient...

question about mobo/graphics card by Yes[_2_]
Considering that some of the graphics cards I've seen pictured these days use two of the backplate slots to mount the card, have any motherboard manufacturers started offering mobos that are specifically desigend to accomodate two such cards. When I look at those graphics cards, it just seems like...

WD hi-state = ADATA/Seagate by Flasherly[_2_]
WD, aside, is labeling branded SSDs to color classes: a color meaning, accordingly in keeping with a prior tactic, is to provide no info on build assembly, short of taking it apart for chip nomenclature (colors corresponding to an Enterprise grade are spec'd, though). WD also tends to be...

memtest86+ 5.01 reported RAM speed not credible by [email protected]
I was given an old HP Proliant server to fix. It only had a flat CMOS battery. So I run memtest86+ and it says the memory is DDR3-4123! This is a Nehalem EP generation, and only an E5506, which supported 800 speed with ECC. Also says CAS 19, which you would get with DDR4-4000 RAM.

Sickness strikes again by Flasherly[_2_]
Found an interesting DAC. https://headfonics.com/2016/12/the-adi-2-pro-by-rme/ I'm running up to a possible only a 1/18 to 3/9 sample rate of WASAPI 384Khz, and it would take an Apple to double that. Good Sol Apple strikes again. Problem is a spare couple of thousand dollars, so looking for it...

TOSLINK red laser S/PDIF cable fixes by Flasherly[_2_]
Not really a fix. I had to take apart some laser carrier cables and splitters. Cheap stuff, so wasn't hard to figure. The input-output laser carrier connections is a matter of 64-ths an inch. You can take two of those plastic covered laser carrier wires,

Not so average from a sale at $68 WD Green I saw (shipping and tax possibly not included). They're averaging closer to $100. Past decent feedback, significance in numbers seems to hold, there's the warrantee aspect. Noticed a 4T Toshiba N300 pop up. NAS service oriented with a lot...

What happened to cheap reliable ADSL modems ? by Shadow[_2_]
I bought 2 D-Link DSL 500B modems a while ago at $US 20,00 each. Lightning struck, so I replaced the one that was there, but all I can find locally are expensive "super" Wifi ADSL modems to buy as a spare. Any good solid reliable "simple" models still being made ? (with just a phone jack, an...

The Power and The Horror by Flasherly[_2_]
Something of anomaly the XLS DriveCore technology in a Class D configuration, it goes beyond difficult loads -- At a 2-ohm SPKR load it runs from 550-1200W over the course of four models within the same series nomenclature. (Bridged would be 1100-2400W at 4-ohm.) I'm running a modern 4-ohm at...
