Sata backplanes and RAID by
[email protected]
Hello
I am going to build a small RAID 6 array for my school.
I was thinking about using the SNT-2131SATA backplane for 3 disk, and
use 2 of them for a total of 6 disks.
Using 500GB disks this would give me 2TB and RAID6 for reliability.
The problem is, on the site, only raid 0 and 1 are...

Calculating fibre overhead??? by
ChrisW[_2_]
Hello
So we've heard that a 2 gbps fibre can actually push about 100
megabytes a sec. We want to know how to calc this figure. So, like
with a LAN, you can calc the maximum transfer by taking the total and
subtracting the overhead of ethernet, ip, tcp, and smb. How can we do
this with a SAN? What...

Failure of brand new drive... possibly due to staggered spinup? by
Dan Lenski
Hi all,
I've just experienced a mystifying failure of a hard disk that was
literally only one day old. It is a Hitachi Travelstar 5K160 (80gb
5400RPM SATA) that came with my new Dell laptop. I had installed
Ubuntu Feisty Linux, and everything seemed to be working fine, and I
even checked the...

1U SATA / SAS RAID to eSATA? by
Will
Does any vendor make a 1U or 2U SATA / SAS RAID enclosure that uplinks to
the host by a simple eSATA connection (i.e., RAID on the enclosure, not RAID
on the host adapter).

StorEdge L25: Cleaning tapes not recognized? Cause for 2411? by
Alexander Skwar
Hello.
We're using a StorEdge L25 system with two mags and one drive. In both
mags, there's one cleaning tape. We're using VERITAS NetBackup 6.0MP4
as our backup software. The backup software recognized those tapes as
cleaning tapes (it's showing "HC_CLN" as Media Type).
However, this morning the...

utility to zero fill slack space by
Patches Forever[_2_]
I thought there was a Norton Utilities program that had the capability to
write zeros on all the unused space on the hard drive. I looked at all the
menu options in Norton DiskEdit and Disk Doctor and I don't see any such
capability.
Can someone tell me do you know if Norton has it anywhere? ...

OPEN-E SAN Device - Anyone?? by
The Computer Dood
I jut found out that there is a bootable USB device called OPEN-E, that
is a "SAN IN A BOX". It basically boots on a bare-metal server, allows
management of the drives, and allow you to set up a ISCSI TARGET server.
I am getting a demo disk. I understand that several vendors are using

Need help setting up Compaq TL891 mini library by

I run a small business and was tempted to automate my backups and
bought a used Compaq TL891 minilibrary from ebay. I thought it would
be as easy to plug in as my earlier Compaq 15/30 GB tape drive. Boy...
was I mistaken.
In my excitment (and overconfidence) I bought the library without...

SAS / SATA RAID to Fibre? by

Does anyone make a standalone 1U or 2U rackmount device that does RAID 5 and

channel?
I'm wanting to use one of these per server, so space is an issue and a full

Some questions concerning defective sectors on an internal HD by
Bernd Stelter
I bought a 300GB internal Maxtor drive in autumn 2005.
It's not the system drive, I use it only for storing large files under
XP and Linux.
It's formatted as FAT32 with Linux mkdosfs (but I don't think that the
high level formatting is relevant here).
Today I looked into the Windows event protocol...

"Cable Tester" for fibres ?? by

Assuming such a beast exists, can anybody recommend a simple, inexpensive
