SSD problems by
yawnmoth
I have a 128MB USB flash drive that I've kept in the change pocket of
my wallet for several years. I tried to access the contents of it,
today, and couldn't. I inserted the drive into my computer, clicked
on it, and got the following:
You need to format the disk in drive D: before you can use...

Strange problem copying files..... by
Al[_4_]
HI Folks,
Id be real interested on any thoughts on what might be going on here.
This is the situation so far:
1. Backed Up data from computer A to computer B by plugging in the the
hard disk to computer B (via a USB-IDE adapter). Just a bunch of pics
under My Doc's.
2. Formatted Computer A and...

Forensic question about hard drives by
Josh Roig
Suppose A wants access to all the stuff on B's HD, both deleted and
undeleted, except a few letters which B wants to keep private. Is there any
way to do a mirror copy of all the sectors except those containing B's
private letters?

Seagate ST31000333AS in a RAID6, different firmwares? by
Kremlar
Running on an LSI Logic 8708ELP RAID controller, installed my (8) drives in
a RAID 6 configuration today. As luck would have it, during the init
process, towards the end, one of the drives dropped and got marked as
failed. All drives were firmware CC1F. None were listed as having the
recent...

I have a WD 500G HD and when connected to the IDE works great. I have
movies on it about 300G full. The problem is when I try to attach it to an
external USB case then plug that into the usb port the drive takes forever
to come up and be detected and when it does will not display my data. It...

Windows stripping & performance by
Rob Nicholson[_4_]
Our software developers are starting to use VMware workstation as a matter
of course to run various development environments at the same time. Our
current standard of 32 bit Windows XP limits us to 3GB of memory so we're
considering switching to 64 bit Vista with 6GB memory.
At the same time,...

SATA power connector voltages? by
Yousuf Khan
Now I just got myself a new power supply tester doohickey. It tests all
kinds of cables and cords coming out of power supplies, including SATA
ones. According to it, a SATA cable should see +12V, +5V, and +3.3V. Now
my power supply doesn't have any native SATA cables, so I've used a
4-pin...

solar storm protection by
yawnmoth
I was reading about the Solar storm of 1859 on wikipedia.org and about
how really massive solar storms can fry electronics and... I'm
curious... what could one do to protect against a hard drive against
this? As I understand it, placing an object in a faraday cage should
provide sufficient...

I need help recovering data by
samwalker04
My HP zd7000 (5 years old) laptop's hard drive went kaput. I have a
Hitachi Travelstar IC25N model hard drive. I was working on something
and then I got a general windows error "hard disk error" -- then it
froze. On reboot, it says no OS found, disk error. I am pretty sure
this is a physical...

USB external drive keeps disappearing by
Peter B. Steiger
From all the hype it sounded like a USB external HD was a better choice
than a second IDE or SATA internal drive, so I got an iMicro 1TB drive to
store my backups and recover some data from a partially disabled drive.
The darn thing came with a 5-page pamphlet written in Engrish:

Problem with phantom files on MemStickDuo by
DManzaluni
I have a 2 gig non-Sony Memstick ProDuo which seems only to be able to
hold 1 gig. After that it writes broken files. Full sized but
broken. So it can write a 50 gig video file but as soon as it starts
to read it, the read stops. No amount of self-formatting can help this
situation.
The...

Warranty on Seagate 1.5 TB drives by
Daniel Prince
I have been looking at the Seagate 1.5 TB drives on Pricewatch. Some
of the ads do not list the warranty period. Some list the warranty
period as three years. Some list the warranty period as five years.
I looked on the Seagate web site and all I found was this:
How Long Does The Coverage Last?...

Sending SCSI passthrough commands to SATA drives by
galapogos
Hi,
I have software now that sends regular and vendor specific commands to
SATA drives with ATA passthrough. I'm trying to convert that to SCSI
pass through instead, but can't figure out how to. I remember
sg3_utils has a Win32 port that works in the command line but I can't
seem to find it now....

Why does copying files to a new hard drive not defragment it? by
Yousuf Khan
Well, I execute a series disk upgrades on my system yesterday and today.
I copied the contents of two drives to two other new drives. Each new
drive was obviously empty and freshly formatted beforehand. My
assumption was that copying the entire contents of each older drive
would rearrange them...

I have this drive http://www.simpletech.com/parts/spu351tb.htm but have

next to the power jack. But this drive has nothing either on it or in...
