Solid State hard drives. Yeah or nay? by
8-Track
I'm thinking of getting a solid state drive for my boot and critical
programs and the local computer guy may be getting a 60Gig as trade in for
a customer that wants to get a 120Gig. This means I can get the 60G dirt
cheap.
I don't know the model etc yet and was wondering if you guys had any...

defrag takes much longer on 1000GB drive by
sandot
Defragging my 1000 GB hard drive takes much longer than a 200 GB or 500
GB. drive. My system may be a bit slow but the difference in time is
very large (maybe 10 times longer). The cluster size on all my hard
drives is 4KB.
Is it because the NTFS indexes and other system software are so big...

Freeware version of Partitino Magic? by
mm
I think I once read here that there is a freeware imitation of
Partition Magic, or at least something cheaper.
My current need is to take a partition that's already in use and make
it smaller so that I can carve out a small partition from the space
that used to belong to it. Partition Magic would...

2.5 inch enclosure failure as coincidence? by
DManzaluni
I bought a few USB 2.0 IDE enclosures on ebay for 2.5 inchdrives,
described as "new chipset" enclosures
They are very simple, and were cheap.
Curiously both have failed at the same time after about a year of not
particularly heavy periodic use. They have failed on all drives and
with similar...

Looking for decent SATA RAID controller by
BD
Hi, all.
I have an Asus M4A79 mainboard, and 4x640GB WDD SATA disks.
The mainboard has RAID controller functionality, but I wasn't able to
get it to work before my patience ran out, and I've seen some reviews
that the stability of RAID under this chipset is questionable.
I want to find a decent,...

CHKDSK hangs -- HDD failing? by
Dave Hardenbrook[_2_]
I have a fairly old but operational 2002 self-built system running
Windows XP Home SP3 from a Maxtor 15 GB HDD (mainly for legacy games
that don't like newer hardware). Windows has started reporting
corrupted system files, and when I attempted to "Ghost" the drive with
Acronis TrueImage Home,...

Bad Blocks? by
Why I Like BT
I want to dual boot my XP machine with a Linux OS. I tried to use Acronis
Disk Director to use some free space from my C partition to create a new
partition for Linux but an error message came up stating that it couldn't do
it owing to "bad blocks" on the disk. What I know about HDDs can be...

Can anyone compare speeds and client CPU overhead for USB2, FW, and
GbE for a connection to an external disk used as working storage for
something computationally intense such as a Photoshop work disk?
Thanks

Using laptop HD on desktop, no power felt. by

Hello,
I'm trying to connect a laptop IDE hard drive onto a PC and
read it.
I'm using an IDE laptop to desktop drive adaptor. I connect this
adaptor into the laptop drive's pins, and then the PCs power connector
and IDE cable to it.
I turn on the PC, but hear no power in the drive. Motor doesn't...

DVD drive "device is not ready" in XP by
Tom Del Rosso[_3_]
Under XP Pro, the DVD burner can't detect that a disc is present, whether
data or audio.
Bootable CDs can boot though, so the hardware's fine.
Reinstalling the driver doesn't help.
The mfg installer CD isn't any help, unless I can copy from their CD to a
flash drive on another PC.

Gateway computer - DVD disk drive opening by
Richard Fangnail
I got a small Gateway desktop and it's hard to open the DVD drive.
You have to push really hard and slow on the button, or sometimes you
have to open the hinged part first. Sometimes I've had to look for
an
Eject command in a program.
Having to deal with the hinged part isn't so great either...

SATA controller to clone drives...? by
Geir
Hi,
I want to efficiently clone a number of SATA harddrives. Instead of
purchasing an expensive dedicated drive cloning box, I wonder if there
are fast PCIe SATA disk controller cards which are able to directly
clone disks using appropriate software. Either ont-to-one or one-to-two...
