finally tossing all my old floppy disks - the end of an era by
Andrew Hamilton
I recently connected my 3 1/2" floppy drive to one of my systems, and
discovered that all my old floppies are no longer readable. And, most
of them can't even be formatted successfully.
No real surprise here, since most of the disks are well over 10 years
old, including lots of those AOL...

I have an ISO image of a DVD that keeps failing to burn. I first tried
it on my desktop, which has two burners on it. I tried to burn it on
both burners, and it failed on both. In one burner it got through the
burn, but failed verification, while in the other burner it failed even

[Adaptec 2610SA] Add HDD to existing RAID 5 array by
Bubba[_3_]
Greetings,
is there a way to add a disk to a RAID 5 array (4x 500GB) in order to
expand capacity? The only option I can manage to find in Adaptec's BIOS is
adding a hot spare, but no sign of expanding array.
I use Debian Lenny - is there any CLI tool for Adaptec SATA RAID
management?
TIA!

The security of Mozy by
curious guy
I am thinking of using the Mozy paid backup service as my primary
backup system. I have some concerns.
What country are the Mozy servers located in? How well are the
privacy right of individuals protected in that country?
Can Mozy employees look at my files? Would it be safe for me to
backup...

smartctl when disks are in standby (Linux) by
David Brown[_2_]
I've been playing around a little with standby for disks on a Linux
system - mostly it works well, with disks waking up automatically as needed.
If I try a smartctl test ("smartctl -t short /dev/sda") on a standby
drive, however, it fails - it will wake up the drive, but smartctl gives
up...

RaidTec FlexArray RAID configuration by
Marco De Vitis
Hi,
I need to understand what's wrong in a SCSI storage enclosure like this:
http://www.dmi-inc.com/pdf/raidtec/flexarray_hi12.pdf
It was mounted on a Linux system, and suddenly appeared to have bad
filesystem errors.
I couldn't work around the problem in any way through software.
I'd like to...

Western Digital Drives in RAID 1 - diagnostic by
Justin[_8_]
I have two WD SATA drives set up as a RAID 1 under Vista64 Ultimate.
If I want to run WD's diagnostic, do I have to disable the RAID in the
bios? The Vista utility does not see the drives individually.
If I download the boot disc version - will I still have to disable the
RAID in the bios to get...

Static IP outside of router DHCP range by
Smarty
I am using an older and very stable Linksys WRT54G router and have DHCP
enabled for the clients. One of my router's current DHCP clients is a video
server which gets a fresh IP address occasionally when the router or video
server is re-booted.
This creates a problem, since the 8 video clients...

Is SATA always hot-plug? by
Andrew Hamilton
I just got an external drive case (Rosewill, FYI) which includes an
internal to eSATA bracket. Now on one of my systems, there is no SATA
support on the motherboard, so I got an Adaptec SATA controller, which
works great.
If I connect the cable from this internal to eSATA bracket to a spare
port...

Got it home and tried to format it. No-go. Aborted.
Ran powermax on it. It finds and corrects errors, but it
seems to have an endless supply of errors to be fixed one at a time.

Seagate backup issue by

Hi all,
I have an HP dv700t laptop running 64-bit Vista Home Premium whose HD
started failing (the SMART system warned of an imminent HD failure.) It was
still under warranty so I shipped it back to HP. Before doing so, I did a
full backup to an external Seagate FreeAgent Desk 1.5TB drive....
