Spinrite by
Tom Del Rosso
I have a drive with bad sectors in the FAT area, so I thought of
Spinrite since it works at the low level, but they tell me that their
program can't fix it. I couldn't expect them to explain why, so I'll
ask here.
I had thought that Spinrite relocates sectors at the low level, and as
far as the...

XP, let go of my old hard disk! by
Inspector J Lee
Hello,
I just bought a new Western Digital 40GB hard disk to replace my 5-year-old
C drive. I used PartitionMagic to clone the drive and then made it an active
drive. I then swapped the cables out so the new drive is in the master
position on the cable and the old drive is on another IDE...

Best Backup for a RAID 0 setup by
Aidan
Just wondering what the general consensus is for a backup solution for a new
RAID 0 array that I'll be setting up with two of the new WD Raptor 10K SATA
drives. I'm thinking an external hard drive with Norton Ghost and updating
the drive image routinely should be safe but then again I'm new to...

Drive Image 2002 giving "Error 91" by
[email protected]
I am running W2K SP3 and have been using Drive Image 2002 without
problems for over a year.
Today , when I used the D.I. floppies to access a saved Image File ,
after the second floppy reaches the part where the normal D.I. green
screen appears , I'm now getting the following error message...

Constant disk access even when machine is idle? by
Sriram
Hello all,
I recently upgraded my Inspiron 8100 (866 MHz P3 Mobile, 256 MB RAM)
to a 60GB Hitachi Travelstar drive. At the same time, I went from Win
2K Professional SP1 to SP4.
I have 5 partitions on this drive, 3 of them unformatted as yet. (I
thought I'd use them for Linux.) The sizes are 4GB,...

Do I really need Raid a system? by
Kenny Maultsby
I am thinking about upgrading my P4 system to the new 800MHz type
motherboard, and I have noticed that most of them come with onboard Raid
controllers. I have a single 60gig harddrive on my system now. This is what
I want to do with my computer. I run XP pro. Online gaming digital video
editing...

RAID Mirror Questions by
Matt
I am running a RAID 1 as a second drive using an Adaptec 1200A PCI
controller card and 2 80 Gb Maxtors and have my data stored on this in the
interest of fault tolerance and backup purposes. Now, after lurking in this
NG, I'm wondering if this is indeed a good idea and whether RAID 1 is
pointless...

5 1/4" floppy drives by
Tom Del Rosso
Do new mobo bioses still support 5 1/4"? Someone I know wants a new
computer for home, but wants the old drive so he can slowly transfer his
old stuff, rather than do it all at once before getting the new machine.
In the past couple of years I only tried this once, on a Compaq, and it
didn't...

Floppy by
eric ng
Hiya,
As everybody notices, every new pc all equiped with a 3.5" floppy which I
find it almost useless as every machine can be booted up via CDs, or some
via SCSI drives. Is there any pc manufacturer consider replacing the small
capacity, out of date floppy with some other formats, e.g. mini disc,...

Firewire daisychaining mysteries by
IAN MCFARLANE
I've posted similar questions like this before but I guess that I'll simply
keep trying.
I have a Windows XP OS on a Dell XPS T700r machine (yeah my machine is now
about 3.5 years of age). But in any case, I have one annoying problem with
my firewire setup. When I purchased an external Maxtor 80GB...

Question on 250GB Maxtor Drive by
Aaron
Hey All,
Yesterday I received my new Maxtor Maxline II 250 GB drive from Newegg. I run WinXP
with SP1, and I made the registry change to support 137GB drives. Whenever I run
Thorough Format or Thorough Chkdsk, however, it freezes at about 60%, and just
never progresses any further. (Could...

Fried Phillips chip on my Quantum Fireball lct 08 26 Gb drive by
HawkMan98
Hi,
My daughter's computer's boot drive has stopped working. It
is a Quantum Fireball lct 08 26 Gb drive, part number LA26A011 Rev
01-A. The Phillips chip on the PCB has a corner that is charred. The
drive, when cold, will spin up and will be recognized by the BIOS, but
while I am holding the...

Date Recovery Services ? by
Someone
We have a Maxtor "DiamondMax Plus 8" 40GB hard drive
which was formatted for FAT32. It doesn't work anymore.
The drive spins up, no unusual noises. During POST, the
drive is auto-detected properly. After POST, however,
BIOS says "Primary hard drive failure" and stops. Hard
drive does not spin...

course, continue the thread - but the harddrive is wiped and gone
now...

X-No-Archive: yes
Hi Group
Anyone aware of a utility names Seamap?
Can it really remap damaged sectors?
Is it available on the web or is supplied only with the HDDs?
