iSCSI recommendation wanted by
Tim Boyer
We're looking at replacing an ancient Clariion, and adding more servers to the
mix. I'm looking for about 1 TB of storage split between 5 servers. We don't
push any of them very hard, so I'm leaning towards iSCSI.
The IBM DS300 looks _really_ good. Most of the other smaller units I've looked
at...

FSC Codes for IBM LTO2 Tape Drive by
Will
On a tape library we use, we are getting an FSC1 code of 4822 for an IBM
LTO2 tape drive. What does this code indicate?
Where does IBM document all of the four digit error codes for the LTO2 tape
drive?

Does breaking RAID1 mirror generally destroy drive contents? by
ohaya
Hi,
I was working with an HP Proliant DL360 system with a "Smart Array 5i"
controller and 2 72GB SCSI drives.
The system was originally configured with the two drives in a RAID1
configuration, as one "Logical Drive". The Logical Drive was
partitioned as one 10GB partition and one 60GB...

An inconsistency was encountered during backup by
[email protected]
In the past I've had instances of the following problem. During backup
operations to a tape, I'd get an error such as this:
"An inconsistency was encountered on the media in miniQIC. Do not
append to this media."
I finally solved this problem, and wanted to pass the solution on to
others.
If I...

replication and tape backup by
[email protected]
If I use replication to make a copy of data at a DR site
how do I create a tape backup off of that for long-term
retention? Short-lived snaps are no problem, they only
live on disk but once every few months I want to write a
tape to capture that point in time for longer retention.
If the DR site...

IBM 3995 optical jukebox? by
Mike
Recently I had an IBMer at work that said the 3995 Optical
Jukebox should only have about 300 mounts per day. We're way
over that number. Before I ask to have two more drives purchased
(to mitigate the mount load), can someone confirm or deny the
above statement about 300 mounts per day?

Beginner's question on RAID 1+0 by
Maxim S. Shatskih
What is RAID 1+0? A mirror of 2 stripe sets? Or a a stripe assembled
from lots of 2-disk mirrors?
I've heard that one of those ways is bad, and thus the widely used RAID 1+0
uses the second way. Why the first way is bad?

FC-AL backplanes/enclosures by
RPR
Hi all,
I inherited a couple Fibre Channel Cheetahs (ST39102FC) that I'd like
to build a small but fast disk subsystem with. Can anyone recommend
reasonably priced backplanes or enclosures to build a nice loop? I'm
looking at 6 to 8 drives for a start but given that these are really
cheap on eBay,...

tracking binaries in user home dirs by

Does anyone know of a way to track binary usage from a users NFS
mounted home dir?
We're running into a problem where a user is running binaries out of
their home dir that are already installed in AFS causing the NFS
server to get hammered. I'd like to be able to trace who that user
is.

Peter Fok
Hello,
We would like to increase the remote replication bandwidth between our
Symmetrix 8000 boxes with additional ESCON lines but we are running
out of card slots in our Symmetrix 8830.
Can someone tell me if there are ESCON cards available with 4 or more
ports?
Thank you,

I have a Dell Pentium 3 PC that I'm thinking about upgrading. I found
a website that builds barebones machines, and I'd like to use my
existing SCSI hard drive. The problem is, all of the motherboards
they offer seem to only be compatible with ATA or IDE hard drives.
So my main two...
