Raid level write verification by teckytim
Is it true that Raid levels like 1, 1+0, 3, 4 verify on the fly that both the data write and the ecc write match while levels like raid 5 don't (with few exceptions on the very high end)? Is this dependant rather on make & model? TIA

Veritas Netbackup Database multi Stream by Fknapp
I are trying to backup a SQL database using multiple streams. I can shutdown the database using bpstart_notify.bat, both streams kick off and run, however when one stream finishes it restarts the database using the bpend_notify.bat script... This of course makes my...

Comments on Software RAID for O/S volume? by The One We Call 'Dave'
Hi, We're going to be purchasing a database server from IBM. Although the database itself will be housed on a 10-drive SCSI-based external storage unit, the operating system will reside on two drives housed in the server itself. The drives will be mirrored (RAID 1). I noticed that the server quote...

VxVM-3.5 "vxplex" question by [email protected]
Hey. I'm in a situation in which I'm having to bone up on a bunch of VxVM stuff w/o access to a system: doing it all by reading Veritas manuals and SunOS/VxVM man-pages on the web, and taking notes (which helps me learn). A few weeks ago, I looked for Veritas-dedicated Usenet groups and found...

RAID setup help by Phil
Hi First of all, what is the difference between a RAID controller and a RAID card. Promise (www.promise.com) seem to have two product ranges of the above products. And also, what is the best RAID controller/card (not just promise) to go for, that won't slow the performace of my PC in any way,...

Best hardware solution for personal internet backup by [email protected]
Hi, I wish to create a backup solution that will backup all my home data (nightly/incrementally) off site to my brother's home network over the internet using broadband. I'm assuming that I will need to connect via a VPN to join the two networks. I will use software to capture the dynamic IP...

SSD and Caching by Anwar Mahmood
Hi All, Apologies in advance if I'm being particularly simple. With SSD drives coming down in price, and becoming a standard feature in Intel's forthcoming Centrino 2 architecture, will this make caching redundant in operating systems? Current operating systems such as Windows XP and much more...

Fibre Channel Hub by Rico
hi, Can anyone recommend a fibre Channel hub which will provide failover for a W2k cluster with a Metastor E2400 and QLA2300F/66 2Gb PCI HBA's. Would a IBM Netfinity Fibre Channel Hub - 3523 or Emulex LH1005 do the job? I'm looking for something less expensive than 8 port switch. cheers

Performance issues with StorageTek D173 SAN / Solaris on Sparc by [email protected]
Hi all. I have a second hand Storagetek D173 disk array, that I am struggling with performance (or lack of) It has six 10k, 73GB disks and dual 1Gbit controllers (everything is fibre) Currently all the disks are configured in RAID0 (it was RAID5, but thought it might have been that slowing it...

(S)ATA robustness by Zak
I'm wondering how much difference there exists between SATA and, say FCAL drives when it comes to robustness. I'm talking drives that will be more than 20% busy with seeks, always spinning, in news servers. I've seen a too-high rate on FCAL disks used as JBOD - about half the drives developing bad...

Problem 'ejecting' external USB drive on Win2K by Bill Todd
I'm starting to feel like an idiot for not being able to get Win2K to 'eject' an external USB drive that I got as a Christmas present for my wife and daughter. Each time I request that it be 'ejected' (to make it safe to remove it, presumably by flushing Win2K's internal file cache to it) it...

Confused drive by Larry Cywin
I have a 30gb Maxtor drive with a small problem. I'm not sure how I did it, but drive suddenly shows up as unformatted. Using Partitionmagic, I was able to put a small partition on it (as a test), and disk editor says that my data is still intact. How do I get it back?

Question about SNCP FC-Level 2 exam by Alamo
Hey - I figured this was the perfect place for my question. I'm in the process of studying up for the SNCP FC-Level 2 exam. I know when I looked into this about a year ago Tom Clarks first book was the one to read. Is that still true ? I'm just a little nervous and want to make sure...
