Bit of wire as good as an antistatic strap? by
William W. Plummer

If I want to improvise an antistatic strap then could I simple wrap
some wire around my wrist (or my ankle) and then attach the other end
of the wire to the case of the PC I am working on?
Isn't that all an antistatic strap (like this one shown here) really
is?

Be careful at "Computer Shows" by
William W. Plummer
I was trying to buy an APC battery backup. The seller went routing around
in the box to find a "good" one but it didn't seem to work. When he turned
it over, there was a sticky saying, "Returned. Doesn't work.".
Probably a lot of what you can buy at these shows are just some company's
junk...

ide cables maximum length 65cm or longer? by
William.R.Reisen
Hi,
I read somewhere that ide cables should only be 65cm long. There are
some cables that are 90cm long.
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/Online_Catalogue_IDE_151.html
Some are just plastic some have some metal braiding round that may
shield them. I have a full tower case the longer cables...

The fire is out - next step . . . by
Williams
(see my recent posts starting with "The fire is out . . .)
When I receive the new motherboard from DFI (NFII Ultra Infinity), I will
need to remove my Athlon XP CPU from the damaged board, which has the
AMD-supplied heat sink and fan installed. I didn't look when I had the case
open last, but...

The fire is out . . . response from DFI by
Williams
On 2/26, I posted the following:
"The bad news is that the fire was on the motherboard. It appears to have
started at the Firewire connector on the motherboard that goes to the
adapter card. The connector cable (mobo end) is pretty well destroyed, and
the one of the pins on the mobo is gone...

I got the 2nd new NFII Ultra Infinity motherboard from DFI, after the first

Modding Q: Stand-alone fans
Hello,
Hope everyone is doing well. I'm a noob to modding and have some
questions, TIA.
1. What are some of the ways to power a stand-alone AC fan array
WITHOUT using the psu?
2. What is the best way to get power to stand-alone fans besides psu?

Install mobo, then cpu by
Willie The Wimp
My Asus manual sez to install cpu only after mobo is installed in case.
I usually install cpu with mobo on bench-top.
They prolly figger you'll klutz it and break the cpu fan working the
board into the case or similar.
Any opinions?

About that artic silver stuff... by

I was reading about various high performance thermal pastes

thermal connection between their CPU cores and their metal
heat spreaders the cpu's all come with now.
Seems like I've never seen any explanation of how they do it
in any of the...

What fan should I use and where to put it in my comp? by
Wilson
I just put in an ATI video card that has a heat sink and fan. However, my
comp also has 3 opticals and 2 hard drives. I think I better put in another
fan. I was thinking about a slot fan, but I do not know what I need to do. I
can't tell if my the fan on my front panel is sucking or blowing, and...
