So many online reviews are a mess by Percival P. Cassidy
It's occurred to me that now, with such vendors as Amazon and NewEgg listing items that are actually sold by other vendors, it's impossible to be sure to what items a review is referring: is the review of a brand-new item, a used item, an open-box item, or a used but refurbished/renewed item?...

(Un)Reliable vendors of "renewed/"refurbished" drives? by Percival P. Cassidy
I'm considering buying some "renewed/"refurbished" drives -- typically "enterprise" models that presumably have been replaced according to a "just in case" schedule. Are there vendors of such drives with particularly good or particularly bad reputations? Perce

Fast way to wipe an external HDD? by Kirk Bubul[_2_]
I have recently acquired 2 new WD My Passport 4 TB external hard drives. I really like their small size, different colors, and the fact that they get their power from the USB 3.0 cable plugged into the USB port on my desktop - no separate power cord and little brick to crawl around plugging into...

using SAS SSD - what's best config? by [email protected]
I notice with SAS backplanes, you typically have a cage for 6 drives on one side, and two 4-lane cables on the other. So it is sharing bandwith. Maybe suffices for spinning rust, but would this be a problem with SSD? Or should one instead go for a huge drive, such as Seagate Nytro 15 TB? they...

Mix SAS and SATA drives? by Percival P. Cassidy
This is now an academic question, since the SAS drive that seemed to be about the same price as a same-size SATA one appears to be a refurb. But maybe the answer will be useful later. Is there any disadvantage in mixing SAS and SATA drives on an SAS controller? My FreeNAS machine has all SATA...

What's the best way to fully erase external working USB HDDs? by Ant
Hello. What's the best way to fully erase external working USB HDDs? I don't think old classic DBAN can handle external working USB HDDs? Any others to use in Linux, Mac OS, and Windows to reuse the external USB HDD (not broken/dead yet)? -- Quote of the Week: "Ants never sleep." --Ralph Waldo...
