Daylight savings time blunder by
_BNC
Every transition to/from Daylight savings time results in a 1 hour
discrepancy between file time stamps on FAT32 volumes and NTFS
volumes. Any way to auto-correct so that both are handled in the
same fashion?

30 terabyte solution? by
Dan Stromberg
We're needing to get specs on a storage solution with the following
attributes:
1) Costs between $50k and $200k
2) Can store 30 terabytes with a single, unified namespace
3) Doesn't have to be blazing fast. We've only discussed RAID solutions
internally so far, but I suspect they might find a...

I would be interested if anyone can comment on the merits of spanning two
raid5 volumes.
I have just acquired a server built into a Supermicro SC933T-R760 chassis.
The 15 drive bays are populated with 14 Maxline II 250gb sata drives
installed for data storage and a WD Raptor for the OS. The...

Active / Stanby connection to fibre channel robotic control by
Wanni
Want to get a clarification if the following is possible.
First, understand that it is not possible to have more than one
initiators to the robotic control of a tape library.
What we want to achieve here is a HA of a backup media server.
Can we have 2 hosts, one active and one standby, both...

restoring drive from backup DVD's by
Doc
I used Nero to make a backup of my 18-gig system drive, running WinXP Home.
Took 5 DVD-R's. So, if the time ever came when I had to restore the drive
from the discs, how would I do it?
Thanks!

Is the RAID-5 write penalty really necessary? by
Adam Megacz
No really, I checked the FAQ on this.
I understand the reason for the RAID-5 write penalty. What I don't
understand is this: why not just set the block size to (N-1)*blocksize
(where N is the number of drives in the array and blocksize is the
hardware-level block size).
Since you can only write...

SAN or FC Switch not passing device "name" to HBA? by
ohaya
Hi,
I realize that this is a kind of esoteric question, but I hope that
someone here can help.
We have some systems with dual-channel QLogic QLA2312 FC HBAs. These
are connected to an EMC 32-port FC Switch, which is in turn connected to
an EMC Clariion CX700 SAN.
Once we get everything...

Storage for home networks by
Alexander Schmidt
Hi,
does anyone know an affordable solution (no NAS/SAN applicance for more than
2000 EUR/$) to provide storage in a home EtherNet network (e.g. via USB2 and
a Router) ?
Of course, for security reasons, the system must support RAID.
Is there anything available ?

Also, where can I get an explanation of the full feature set on the 9840?

Direct Attached Storage - Dell vs HP? by
Paul Hutchings
I'm struggling to find any web forums that cover servers and storage and
that sort of thing.
Long story short we have to change a bunch of kit at work including our
main filserver.
Ideally we'd like a SAN solution but they cost a small fortune.
Assuming a SAN is out of the question, we're...

Trick to connecting server directly to SAN? by
Rob Lancia
I have what may turn out to be a very basic question about connecting
a Dell server to a DataDirect Networks SAN. I should mention that all
of the existing setup was done by someone else, and although I have
the DataDirect User's Guide I have no real SAN experience to fall back
on.
The gist is...
