Win XP with new components by pheasant16
AMD Athlon II X3 MSI 980 mobo DDR3 memory can't imagine other peripherals would matter, but will have a sata hd, dvd burner, pci modem and old pci soundblaster if I can make it work. Have both XP and Win 7 disks. Most of my programs are 5+ years old, and made for XP. Still partial to XP after...

Possible to build a solid college desktop for $400? by [email protected]
Need a solid desktop for basic college use.... but that has an upgrade path as far as motherboard etc if more capability needed such as CAD work. Right now Id rather buy a GOOD case and power supply and motherboard and cheap out on the CPU, optical drives, etc. New Egg has some "kits" for around...

RAID 0 or RAID 1 by Richard Cranium
Planing to build new PC. Core i7-930 CPU. Main function will be movies - commercial and home - HD and otherwise. Lots of moving copies of movies from original sources (DVDs or cameras) to HDD temporarily for viewing - sometimes burning discs too. Considering two options: 1. RAID 0...

Components issues: Memory: DDR3 w/o parity? USB3 obsolete? RAID 0or 1? by RayLopez99
I'm getting DDR3-1333 MHz SDRAM rather than the 'overclocked' 1600 MHz, for slightly less money, since I don't do overclocking, nor much gaming for my new Intel i7 mP. Also I assume that for non-servers parity vs non-parity (sic) ECC (Error Correction Code) is not an issue (from stats I've seen...

Who owns a UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply)? by RayLopez99
I do, living in Greece where the power gets cut off frequently for a few seconds to a few minutes every few days. They say it's the fault of the building I'm in, though the power company also has brownouts all the time. Who else? RL

HP Pavilion m9088hk losing CMOS settings even with new CR2032 by Man-wai Chang

PC doesn't turn on, but power button & LED are blinking. by Andy[_14_]
Primary suspect = failed power supply? Or is it the motherboard? The fan on my processor doesn't spin, and the power LED on the front of my computer just blinks.

Moving back to a CRT from flat panel monitor by pheasant16
Booted up the old box, starts loading XP, gets to splash screen, then goes black. This old computer had run a flat screen before being replaced. I didn't set the resolution back thinking I'd taken all needed files off it. Course I found a few I forgot. Booted to safe mode, tried setting...

Power Supply by [email protected]
I don't understand - but, once in a while, my posts don't show up in Forte on my screen. Maybe someone can help. I sent the following post last night and Forte lists it as Sent: I assume that power comes from wires that come out of the power supply - yes? I've always wondered if a builder ever...

power supply questions by dh@.
Hi, I work at a night club and we have a lighting control board that has two mother boards. The other day it wouldn't try to come on at all, acting like it wasn't getting power. So I made sure it was getting power, unplugged and plugged it back several times, and tried starting it several times....

Power supply by [email protected]
I assume that power comes from wires that come out of the power supply - yes? I've always wondered if a builder ever comes up short (of wires) to power equipment (not enough wires for the components he/she wants in the PC or the wires being too short to reach and still be able to be routed so that...

MSI motherboard and HDMI sound by pheasant16
Wanted to move desktop to HDTV for Hulu; and 8 year old box wasn't a candidate. Bought an MSI NF980-65 because it had an intgrated video with HDMI output. Built the box, dragged browser from monitor to tv, great picture; no sound. Have been googling and finding this issue resolved when using...

List of compatible components by [email protected]
In a previous thread, one of you gave me a list of compatible components to build my own, first PC. I've lost the list and am hoping to get it back. The one thing I remember is that the case had a slot on top for an SSD. It might have been 'Peter.' Not sure. My group got corrupted and I lost...

64 bit Windows and 3gb ram - problem? by poachedeggs
From one website: "Who Shouldn't Go 64-Bit? If you're not planning on going to 4GB of RAM anytime soon, you might wanna hold back, __since you need 4GB of RAM to take full advantage of 64-bit's memory management.__ " I see many 64 bit Windows 7 laptops with 3gb, and occasionally see 2gb 64 bit...

Tools needed to build my own PC by [email protected]
OK, I'm back. Things are going slowly because of the pain in my head - but they're moving forward. What tools do I need to put together a PC (all suggestions welcome). Is there a small, powered screwdriver, variable speed, for this sort of thing? (I know I don't need a powered screwdriver for...

Newegg is Changing by geoff
I've ordered from Newegg for over 5 years and never had to return anything. Several months ago, I ordered an HIS video card and had to return it, it didn't work. Recently, I ordered an AMD Phenom II which had no certificate of authenticity. I posted a review for the motherboard I got and did...
