Windows backup software by Yousuf Khan[_2_]
I've been using Macrium Reflect for a long time. A friend of mine wants to start backing up his system disk, so I had suggested Macrium Reflect to him as well. Don't want to keep using the Free Edition indefinitely, so wanted to buy a license. Found out that the price of Macrium has gone up...

What wears out in an HDD? by Micky
What wears out in an HDD? Is it only the tone arm that breaks? or can the bearings the platter rides on break??? Good watches use jewels, rubies, as bearings; and cheap watches use metal. What do hard drives use? I googled but couldn't find much about this. Does the spindle really ride on...

life of inactive old hard drive ? by [email protected]
I had stored some drives from old PCs, removed about 1999-2000. They were wrapped in anti-static bags, put in a metal box, which was placed in a cool dry place. My ex-wife wanted some data off one of those drives, but when I plugged it in, it just went clunk, and I couldn't read it. Disk diagnostic...

Seagate 6TB SATA drives -- ST6000DM001 vs. ST6000DX000 by Percival P. Cassidy
I have some 6TB Seagate drives that were bought in their "retail packaging" as STBD6000100, but the drives themselves are identified as ST6000DX000. The 6TB "bare" drives are advertised as ST6000DM001. (I don't have any to check to see how they are identified internally) Is there really any...

Error copying file with UDF on Windows 7 by Justin[_14_]
I have a 16GB USB3 jump drive and I get the following error when copying files off the drive. "The file name you specified is not valid or too long. Specify a different file name" Obviously the file name is not too long. I tried this with the same drive formatted to version 2.01 and the newest...

Mac OS X doesn't see the encrypted partitions on my external SATA HDD when using different adapter/controllers? by Ant
Hi. I got 3 external USB cable adapters to use with external drives like HDDs. I recently used a 3.5" SATA WD 2 TB HDD to back up with Time Machine with encryptions. 2 of them resulted Mac OS X not recognizing the connected drive and offered me to run Disk Utility which showed 2 TB, but not...

Got a warning about my SSD from HD Sentinel by Yousuf Khan[_2_]
Yesterday, I got a big warning email from HD Sentinel stating that my desktop's SSD is about to suffer imminent failure, it said that the Raw Read Error Rate had crossed a certain threshold. HDS also rated the drive health at 0%! But when I went in and logged into the machine itself, and looked...

gift horse 20 drives - only 40 TB by [email protected]
Local community TV station announced they had got a new 40 TB server due to a generous patron. They put a photo of it in their office window. It has 20 drives. So with RAID, that is probably 2.5 or 3 TB per drive. Sounds like an old piece of junk and the donor is varnishing the truth.

Best format for USB flash drives nowadays? by Ant
Let's ask comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware.storage newsgroup as well. I'd assume exFAT can do it, but not sure if non-computer devices can. I know all can do FAT32. Jamie Kahn Genet wrote: exFAT to hold 4GB+ files and for faster read/writes (so I'm told - right?)? ...

WD black too hot to touch by [email protected]
I was testing some Caviar black 2TB drives pulled from a failed pizzabox server. The first 2 passed okay. As it takes several hours for the long test, I left one running overnight. When I got up, I found that Seatools was frozen about 60% through. So I turned off, and tried to unplug that drive,...

Round SATA Cables = STIFF by Ed Light
I ordered some round SATA cables thinking they'd be easy to route. No dice. They are STIFF !!! In fact, to not try to snap off a motherboard socket, they'd have to go straight up for a ways. Just an FYI. -- Ed Light Better World News TV Channel: http://realnews.com
