hard disk failure data point by
Paul Rubin
About 4 years ago I bought a Maxtor Diamondmax 60GB ATA drive at
CrapUSA. I didn't really need it, but was just astounded at the
concept of being able to buy such a high capacity drive for a mere
$300 (of course that amount will get you a much bigger drive now). My
system at the time was using a...

Experiences with Cluster File Systems (ie. GFS) over a SAN by
Andrew Gideon
I've been looking at the possibility of putting some NFS servers "over" a
SAN, providing a "home grown" NAS. This would be one solution that'll meet
our NFS requirements, as we can use Linux (or Solaris) NFS servers which
provide ACL support.
But this requires that the underlying Cluster File...

fork lift upgrades / replacements by
jim coder
Wonder how many on the list have purchased san from one vendor (emc) and
then replaced with another (hds, ibm). what type of issues did you run
into - lessons learned ...etc.
putting together some ideas for a storage meeting and was curious what this
wise list had to offer.
thx in advance.

blinky TH3AA leds by
RPR
The left hand side LEDs are owned by the policy (front end) processor,
and it has run into a fatal error. You can't do much except trying to
re-seat connectors and looking for service. Also make sure that the
power is clean.

Help with Raid 0 settings by
Mr. Anderson
2 Raptor SATA 10.000 rpm on ichr5 raid0, Asus P4C800-E, Windows XP SP2 +
Intel Raid Application Accelerator.
When using HD Tach 3, I get a strange graphic, instead of a more of less
straight line slowly going down, I got plenty of up and downs on the
same 70-90 MB/s range...

Which brand is most reliable for cd-r discs? by
A. Nonimus
Hi, I know this opens a bucket of worms, and I know that in part it
depends on which burner you are using and which software you are
burning with. And that it depends more on the manufacturer of the discs
as opposed to the brand name.
But I have heard that there are SOME disc brands which...

Software vs hardware compression in backups by
Charles Morrall
Backing up to disk is growing in popularity, and I for one certainly
recommend it in most cases. Another theory of mine is that it's more
favourable to use software compression when configuring the backup job
backing up to disk, and to configure the subsequent staging to tape with no
compression. I...

NAS device for a small office - Recommendations requested by
Neil Whitman
I have a 4 user peer to peer network in our office and am seeking a network
storage solution. We've tried the Snapserver 1100 and it offers the speed we
want but it's OS interferes with a data file we're storing. We also tried a
Maxtor 160gb with the Linksys Storage Adapter and it fixed the...

Basic backing up by
Ann W. Bell
Hi,
I have a Windows XP computer with an 80GB hard drive.
The documents and other files that I need to backup take about 20GB.
I can't remember if that's compressed or uncompressed - I just tend
to zip or .tar.gz them up.
If possible I'd like to have at least my documents automatically
mirrored...

Cache question by

Hi everyone,
I'm trying to do a review problem for an upcoming final in my

and couldn't find anything relevant in my notes, book, or google. The
question is:
"A computer system has 16MB of MM (main memory) and an 8K...

15TB SCSI storage solution. Any idea? by

Hi everyone!
Does anyone knows what do I have to use to store 15TB of data without using
a storage server (i.e. I need an off-the-shelf solution, ready to be
installed and configured under Linux whit the minimum effort).
I was thinking about some sort of disk array, also because i need to
configure...

transfer speed over gigabit LAN? by
kalev-
Assuming sequential transfer actually very large files:
From what I recall you'll get about 6MB/s or 7MB/s -ish transfer speeds over
100Mbit ethernet. (From memory)
What can be expected over gigabit LAN (single HDs)?
Ie: x10: 60-70MB seems too high? The seq. transfer rate on IDE disks isn't
it...

are there any good desktop disk drives these days? by
Paul Rubin
I'd like to buy a quiet, reliable hard drive for a desktop PC.
Capacity, speed, and $/GB are unimportant (within reason). I get the
impression that all the standard ATA-type desktop drives are complete
crap, and not intended for heavy use (continuous power-on even without
a lot of i/o). I looked...

performance difference between CX300 and Symmetrix 8430 by
Slava Rimdenok
Hello All,
I know that it sounds quite stupid but how much IOPS could do
Symmetrix 8430 and CX300? How much the performance will be dropped in
case of migration from Symmetrix 8430 to CX300 (assuming they both the
same cache size and 4TB of raw data)? Just rought numbers : 3-4 times
slower?...
