i have the geforece6100 on motherboard.
adding a geforce 8400 gs video card to the system.

question.
when i install the drivers for the new video card.
will that mean that the video card onboard will no longer
work. (different drivers being installed.)

reason why i am asking. if the new video card dies. would i still be able to
go back to the onboard video vga plug.
would it still work without the drivers being reinstalled.

You can have the 6100 IGP drivers installed concurrently with the 8400GS
drivers without any issues. Or you can disable the 6100 IGP in the device
manager after installing the 8400GS. Or in the BIOS if available. Some
boards automatically disable the on-board video when they detect a video
card in one of the slots. Make and model of board?

It will likely not work while the add in card is present. However, it
doesn't permanently disable it - remove the card, the on board video
should spring back to life.

It would still work, though on first boot you may come up in VGA mod
until the drivers for the onboard are reloaded. It will work however.
