View Full Version : Seek PCI card with USB sockets

My mobo has an internal socket for me to attach an additional 2 USB
ports but there's no room for the ports at the front of my PC.

So I could put these extra two USB ports at the back of the machine. To
do that I need an empty PCI card whose only function is to hold two USB
sockets.

Where can I get that?

Or would it just be easier to get a USB adapter card with its own USB
controller . Maybe like one of these:

USB brackets are widely available - typically with two sockets and a
pair of flying leads to go to the mobo.

Be very, very careful, however. The pinout of the mobo connectors vary
from mobo to mobo and it is often necessary to swap individual
connectors within the sockets on the flying leads to match the mobo pinout.

If you get it wrong, it is easy to permanently damage the mobo.

Two of the 8, 9 or 10 or more pins on the mobo connector have a 5 v
supply on them and if you inadvertently ground one of these pins by the
wrong connector configuration, you can blow a non-resetting fuse on the
mobo - or worse.

USB isn't like front panel connectors where, if you put the PWR LED
connector on the wrong way round, you just turn it round if it doesn't
light - with no harm done.

Unless you are absolutely certain that you can get the pinout correct -
use a PCI card..

If you are going to use up a PCI slot, why not get a card with more
USB slots? These cards cost next to nothing these days. Possibly less
than the thing you are looking for. You can never have too many USB
slots.

I'm surprised that you have no space on the front of your PC for USB
slots. I have a widget with a floppy and card reader that connects to
the USB.

As others have pointed out, though, be careful when buying to get
something with the right plugs on the end of the wires.
